Claire’s, a nationwide jewelry and accessories chain targeting young customers, responded to allegations of asbestos in almost a dozen of their glittery makeup items. A concerned mom, a law clerk for a firm specializing in asbestos litigation, was suspicious so mailed her daughter’s makeup to the Scientific Analytical Institute to test for asbestos contamination. All samples tested positive for tremolite asbestos. Any asbestos in a form that can be inhaled is dangerous and can lead to cancers decades in the future. There is no safe level of exposure.
This is the same lab that tested products sold at Justice earlier in 2017 and found they contained asbestos. In that case, Justice sent samples to another lab where the items were tested asbestos-free. Sean Fitzgerald, director of research and legal services at the Scientific Analytical Institute, said they remain confident in their analyses in both instances.
John Deaton, an attorney considering litigation on Claire’s cosmetics, said labs use differing strengths of microscopes perhaps explaining the discrepancy. He stated that his interest was in seeing Claire’s admit the problem and address it. Claire’s responded immediately by pulling all questionable products and issuing refunds to customers. They sent samples of all potentially contaminated products to an independent lab for testing and are waiting for results.
