2017 began with the anticipated move to our new office building. The building is spacious, with conference rooms and multiple relaxed and informal areas – including an outdoor courtyard.
When Ben DuBose purchased the building, he agreed to name it in honor of the prior owner, Adelfa B. Callejo, a notable Dallas attorney. A plaque, placed at the building entrance, will honor this remarkable woman as follows:
The Adelfa B. Callejo Building
From the late 1970s to 2014, this building served as the law offices of attorney and political advocate Adelfa Botello Callejo (b. 1923 – d. 2014). Raised in Millett, Texas, Adelfa B. Callejo first fought for a more just society at the age of nine, interpreting and marching with her immigrant father to protest discrimination in their local school district.
In 1961, Callejo became the first Hispanic woman to graduate from SMU Law School as well as the first Hispanic woman lawyer in Dallas. In a legal career spanning over 50 years, Adelfa Callejo was an acclaimed lawyer in personal injury, family, and criminal law. She also became a tireless civil rights advocate, community leader, and philanthropist.
During Ms. Callejo’s career, several noted political leaders walked the halls of this building, including: Texas Governor, Ann Richards; Texas Governor, Mark White; San Antonio Mayor and U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Henry Cisneros; Texas Supreme Court Justice, Raul Gonzales; Dallas Mayor, Annette Strauss; Dallas Mayor, Tom Leppert; Dallas Mayor and U.S. Trade Representative, Ron Kirk; and U.S. presidential candidate, Ross Perot.
Among Adelfa Callejo’s numerous accomplishments: founder and President of the Mexican-American Bar Association of Texas, Regional President of the Hispanic National Bar Association, President of the Dallas County Criminal Bar Association, Chair of the Dallas Housing Authority, and Past Director of the State Bar of Texas. Ms. Callejo was also named as a Texas Legal Legend by the State Bar of Texas. In 2013, the Dallas Independent School District honored Ms. Callejo by naming a new campus the Adelfa Botello Callejo Elementary School.
We are proud to occupy this space and to continue fighting for those who need assistance to claim their just rights.
