In researching Thanksgiving in our country, I found that there are many variations on the story, including the date, who was present, and why it was established. But, Thanksgiving is not just a holiday. It is to our benefit, and the benefit of others, that each of us is thankful each day. Following are a few quotes that illustrate this:
Albert Schweitzer
“In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.”
Oprah Winfrey
“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.”
Nick Vujicic
“Often people ask how I manage to be happy despite having no arms and no legs. The quick answer is that I have a choice. I can be angry about not having limbs, or I can be thankful that I have a purpose. I chose gratitude.”
Al Jarreau
“Before I get out of bed, I am saying thank you. I know how important it is to be thankful.”
Robert Louis Stevenson
“Keep your eyes open to your mercies. The man who forgets to be thankful has fallen asleep in life.”
Psalm 92:1
“What a beautiful thing, God, to give thanks.”
H.L. Mencken
“In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for; as for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican.”
Will Rogers
“Be thankful we’re not getting all the government we’re paying for.”
Whether humorous or serious, the message is the same. There is always something for which we can be thankful. So enjoy tomorrow and make it a habit each day to find some reason to feel gratitude. Happy Thanksgiving to all!
