Throughout the centuries, people celebrated successful harvests all over the world. The celebration in North America started early in colonization as gratefulness for arriving and surviving the long voyage and harsh conditions they met in the New World.
Today, most American celebrations have grown to focus on family. It begins a season of gathering with friends and family, reliving memories of the past, passing on traditions, and looking forward to the future. With families often living far apart, it continues the connection.
Though most people in the USA have the basic necessities of life plus more, there are many people who are no longer connected to their families and some who do lack the basics of food and shelter. They are often provided special meals and even gifts during this season, but what can be done the rest of the year? Consider how you can make a difference in 2017.
A quick Internet search provides opportunities by interest and location close to you. You might help at homeless shelters by serving meals or reading to the children and others who cannot read. Nursing homes need people to call Bingo games, sing with residents, or just visit and ask about their lives. Our troops overseas like to receive cards and notes. The list goes on and on. If you cannot volunteer yourself, organizations with volunteers always appreciate donations to help them provide needed services. Consider, as you gather with family, discussing ways your family could make a difference in the lives of others this coming year.
All of us at DuBose Law Firm wish you and your families a happy, healthy Thanksgiving!
